MVC with Entrapment/Vehicle On Fire - New Castle Ave./Rogers Rd.
Saturday, February 19, 2011
At 19:10 hours the New Castle County Communications Center alerted Station 20, 22 and Medic 1 for an MVC with entrapment and vehicle on fire at New Castle Ave. and Rogers Rd. Medic 1 went arrival at 19:13 hours reporting a vehicle fully involved. Assistant Chief Snyder (208-B) went arrival at 19:16 hours and took command. ALS-21 reported 2 trauma alerts and requested 2 additional ALS units and an additional BLS. While EMS crews were attending to the patients, there were reports of a subject still in the vehicle. Suppression crews extinguished the vehicle and a search was made with negative results. Bystanders had reported 2 additional patients opposite of the accident scene and it was discovered that these patients were the ones reported to be still in the vehicle. All patients accounted for brought a total of 5 patients transported to CER with 1 patient later being transferred to Crozer Chester Burn Center for further treatment. Crews from Holloway Terrace, Minquadale, and Wilmington Manor Fire Companies assisted with patient care, suppression, and securing the vehicles. Command placed the scene under control at 1945 hours. R-20 and fire police remained on-scene and assisted with lighting and traffic until relieved by DEL DOT. All fire department units cleared and turned the scene over to DSP and Del Dot at 2100 hours. An honorable mention needs to go to the private citizens that were on-scene before any emergency services personnel. They assisted by pulling 4 people from the vehicle before it was completely engulfed by flames. Their quick thinking and having no regard for their own safety definitely changed the outcome of this accident. Units on-scene : Rescue 20, A-20, A-22, A-18, A-28, A-23, Rescue 22, Engine 22-2, Rescue/Engine 28-6, Medic 1, Medic 2, Medic 8, ALS-21, TSU-28, NCC Fire Police, DSP, DRBA PD, and Del Dot.
